One breakout session that's getting a lot of buzz in our office this week is going to be with our own VP of Product Development, Scott Thomas. He's been hard at work pushing out a cool new mobile release for CalendarAnything and tomorrow he's going to show us how we can build an Employee Community in ten minutes leveraging Silverline's WaterCooler app. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely going to bring my stopwatch. Most people know that cloud computing exists, but do not have an understanding of the fundaments concepts that separate cloud computing versus traditional IT infrastructure, i.e., in house hosted. Gartner defines cloud computing as a “style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service using Internet technologies.”[1] In recent years enterprises have begun to transition from pricey, in house managed and hosted IT infrastructure to cloud based services.

Salesforce has given its customers a great deal of functionality with their Communities offerings. It brings external customers and partners into business process with some easy-to-use out of the box functionality. While out of box functionality is always nice to have, it’s also comforting to have the ability to build a fully custom, branded Community using Visualforce. I’d like to share four things I wish I knew before my first implementation of a Salesforce Customer Community. They deal with funky email patterns, how licensing can impact design, and some best practices for the technical team implementing the Community.
