So you’re ready to do it, huh — ready to take that test?! Of course you are. Maybe you reviewed our other post about why now is the time to become a MuleSoft Certified Developer, or maybe you’ve found a dream job and this will make you a stand-out candidate. No matter the motivation, it never hurts to prepare just a little more.

Let’s take a dive into the magic of MuleSoft and get you ready to pass that test with ease. Below are some of the things that helped me get MuleSoft Certified without getting the test-taking blues.

  1. Read Through the Certification Details and Guidelines Datasheet

Make sure you understand the requirements. It’s a simple task, but one that is often overlooked. Knowing just what needs to be done will keep you from making false assumptions and missing key topics to review.

  1. Train All the Ways

There are two ways you can prepare for the MuleSoft Certified Developer test:

  • Instructor-led training
  • Self-study training (MuleSoft.U)

Simply put, I think you should do both. While the instructor-led training will help you get through the course material in a relatively short time with someone to get answers from, the free self-study option will help you figure out the issues/errors on your own. This will help you better learn the tool and how it behaves in the wild.

  1. Complete All of the Self-Study Training Modules

There are 13 modules to the self-study, and all are sequenced to help you learn the tool with ease. Because it is self run, you can learn at your own pace. As needed, you can go back and review any module or sub-topic that you think deserves extra attention. Plus, each module comes with individual quizzes to help you evaluate areas where you need to review a little more.

  1. Pay Attention to Syntax, Event Flow, and Error Flow

Remember, this test evaluates you as a developer. That means you need to know how to build or write the code. When reviewing the modules, make sure you read and understand the log messages, attributes, events, variables, etc. posted for each of the steps in your Anypoint Studio designer. Mastering these will help you confidently pass the test.

  1. Don’t Skip the DIY Exercises

Each module in the MuleSoft.U has DIY exercises that allow you to try out the skills taught in the given module. Remember, this is a developer-focused exam. It tests individuals on their ability to:

  • Take basic APIs through build, test, and debug integrations
  • Connect to many different systems
  • Perform data transformations, control event flow, and perform error handling

These DIY exercises run through different scenarios that build on one another so you get a better idea of what using the tool is like on real systems.

  1. Stay Disciplined

All the training and guidelines in the world are only as effective as how they are consumed and used. So stay focused. Pick the date that you want to take the test. Then create a schedule to complete the modules, factor in some time to perform DIY exercises, and don’t forget a final review before the test.

As important it is to have a plan, it is equally important to stick to it. Allow enough buffer time for unexpected events, but don’t let it allow you to procrastinate when it comes to the training.

Good luck and happy learning!
