Hunger is a global issue. There are one billion people around the world do not have enough to eat. Hunger hits home as well; America has seen a 43% increase in hunger over the last 5 years.
The Silverline team recently traveled to Florida for our annual Silverline Summit. During the offsite, we took part in a corporate social responsibility experience to help change this startling reality for residents of Forida that get nutrition assistance from the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The result of our efforts was a generous donation of 1,600 canned and boxed food items; over 1,000 pounds of nutritious food!
Silverline participants worked with Impact 4 Good, a company that focuses on teambuilding programs that give back to communities. Impact 4 Good led the team in an activity called “Putting for a Purpose.” The goal was to create awareness around food insecurity and work to fight local hunger while being creative, competitive, and fun!
First, Silverliners briefly learned about hunger issues both globally and locally. Then, teams were given all of the materials needed to build their very own miniature golf hole. Each team received a putting green, a golf cup, decorating materials, a theme for their hole design, and over 100 canned and boxed items. The result was a conference room being turned into a miniature golf course using the food items that would ultimately be donated. When golf hole assembly was complete teams competed in a hole-in-one tournament, rotating to the different holes each group created. While there was a winning team, based on performance in the putting competition, the real winner was the Treasure Coast Food Bank.
The Treasure Coast Food Bank’s mission is to alleviate hunger by obtaining and distributing food and other essentials in Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee Counties. Rhonda Blakey, Director of Donor Relations at the Food Bank, attended the event and graciously thanked the group in person. She later added, “Donors like you make the impossible possible. We sincerely believe that hunger can be solved; that this serious issue can be eradicated. However, we can’t do it alone. It takes all of us to get engaged and Silverline showed how powerful that can be.”
