When we say “Better Together” is one of our core values, we don’t just mean in the workplace. With our Silverline CARES initiative, we encourage our employees to be active members of their communities, and devote their time to organizations that make a real impact in the lives of others. 

On this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, we wanted to spotlight the different ways Silverliners came together in 2023 to support a variety of causes, whether that was donating to charities or gathering in person to volunteer at local organizations. 

Quarterly giving campaigns to address major needs

The Silverline CARES team organized quarterly giving campaigns throughout 2023, dedicating each quarter to a different cause. We started with a diaper drive to address the pressing issue of diaper need. One in two U.S. families cannot afford enough diapers to keep their infant or child clean, dry, and healthy, as diapers can’t be purchased with food stamps or WIC. Diaper banks are working to eliminate diaper needs by providing families with diapers and supplies. In the US, there are over 225 diaper banks, which serve over 300,000 families a month and distribute over 150 million diapers every year! And in Canada, organizations like One Diaper Canada and The Diaper Bank of Toronto are helping to ensure that parents can provide for their children’s basic needs. We encouraged employees to visit the National Diaper Network and find a local diaper bank that they could donate to. 

We followed that with an environmental giving campaign supporting Evertreen, an organization that helps businesses positively impact the environment by planting and maintaining forests around the world. Evertreen plants real trees to help offset CO2 and alleviate poverty. Silverliners can monitor the trees via satellite and track the number of trees planted in the Silverline forest, CO2 tons absorbed, and the working hours created for local farmers. We started by planting 1,100 trees, focusing on helping to restore the mangrove ecosystem and income generation along Kenya’s coastal areas, which are continually being affected by sea intrusion and natural disasters. Our forest has grown to over 2000 trees in 2023! 

For the start of a new school year, our third giving campaign was dedicated to Operation Backpack. Operation Backpack is run by Volunteers of America to help fill in the gap for children experiencing homelessness, poverty, and otherwise underprivileged circumstances. Donations from Silverliners helped provide backpacks, school supplies, and funding for academic enrichment to homeless and underprivileged children.

We had some fun with our final giving campaign of the year. We mixed it up and hosted a team challenge to donate to Toys for Tots, which has been collecting and distributing new unwrapped toys to less fortunate children at Christmas since 1947. Our goal was to hit 300 toys, and our three teams — Sleigh All Day, The Toy Troopers, and The Noel It Alls —  collected 384! It was a wonderful and deeply fulfilling way to end the year, and it was inspiring to see teams come together and embrace the giving spirit. 

Paying it forward with VTO events

Silverline is proud to have an official Volunteer Time Off Policy and we love to see our employees connect with organizations that are making a difference. We believe in using the power of our time, skills, and connections to help make this world a better place!

In Toronto, a group of Silverliners visited the Toronto Humane Society, where they volunteered and interacted with cats, puppies, rabbits, and more! The team had an amazing time bonding with the animals and giving back to a great cause. They also learned about all of the services that are provided to the local Toronto community outside of just housing animals, like vet care, emergency services, pet food bank, foster programs, and more. 

In Atlanta, Silverliners got together to plant trees at an urban food farm with Trees Atlanta, a nonprofit community group that protects and improves Atlanta’s urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. The benefits were two-fold: they planted trees that will create a healthier environment, and they got a great workout as they picked up shovels and pitchforks and got to work. 

Project Sunshine is a nonprofit that offers free, in-hospital, and remote programs to thousands of children with medical needs. Working with Silverline, Project Sunshine is undergoing a digital transformation that will enable the nonprofit to scale, reaching more patients and families both in the hospital and at home. 

Silverliners on the Project Sunshine team had a kit-packing VTO event for Project Sunshine where they put together 350 Mandala Kits for young patients with behavioral health needs. These kits were sent to medical facilities that need them the most, and the coolest part? We used the shipping integration work that we developed for Project Sunshine to get these kits to the right facilities!
