A Day in the Life: Umair Ilyas

A Day in the Life

Job Title: Senior Business Analyst
Start Date: April 2018
Fun Fact: I helped build a school in Nicaragua!

What is your position at Silverline and what do you do?

I’m a Senior Business Analyst, my job is to work closely with our Solution Architects and help design and build out Salesforce for our clients. Unofficially, I also provide comic relief.

What does your average day look like?

Since I work with multiple clients – my day usually starts out with back-to-back meetings that consist of stand-ups, sprint reviews, demos, and training. After these meetings, I have time to work on the stuff that the meetings were about! Oh, and quick meditation sessions with co-workers every now and then.

How did you find out about Silverline and your current position?

Funny story, actually. I’m one of the Salesforce User Group Leaders for New York City and most of our events are hosted at Silverline. We do a career connect during these events and at the time Silverline came up and stated a position that was available. And the rest is history.

What motivates you at work?

I really love helping people. I have a background in education and most of my experience has been to empower students to change the world around them for the better. Being in the Salesforce ecosystem helps me empower my clients to achieve success and change their own worlds in the process.

What do you like most about your work?

I always love building things and understanding how things work together in a big picture. Knowing that there is some type of solution that can be discovered and built for our clients is really fun. The end result of seeing our clients excited about using Salesforce is very satisfying.

What are some challenges you face?

I’m learning how to better balance multiple projects with different clients. I want to give 100% to everything.

What new things have you learned since you began working at Silverline?

I’ve learned just how powerful of an impact that “great” technology can have on the culture of a company. Silverline uses Slack, a collaboration hub/message center, and there are so many thoughtful integrations in Slack that help bring employees from across the globe together. We use something called social coffee buddies and each person gets paired up with someone from the company and they are able to connect with someone they had probably never met/worked with yet.

What do you think makes Silverline a successful company?

I think people are very honest and genuine. There is no red tape or artificial hoops to jump through to get something done. I’ve found that people at Silverline want to do a great job and they put you and your success before themselves.

What is your favorite perk?

I think our NYC office is my favorite perk – it’s just awesome. There’s plenty of food/drinks, ping-pong table, and standing desks overlooking Union Square Park. I love being around my co-workers and bonding with all the different departments. One time, we even stayed around after work to play a few games of Super Smash Brothers!

What is your favorite memory?

I’m going to cheat here and share two of my favorite memories.

First, I really enjoyed meeting and getting to work with our 2018 Silverline Academy. The Academy is an on-the-job-training that empowers new hires with the skills that are necessary to be great Salesforce consultants – with everything from Salesforce Trailheads to mock projects to mentorship.

Second, I had a blast volunteering with Silverline and their interactions with PepUp Tech and even CUNY (being an alumn of Brooklyn and Baruch colleges myself). It’s refreshing to work with a company that gives back to the community this way.

What do you hope for your future at Silverline?

I really enjoy what I do now and I hope to continue this into the future. As long as I get to write one Salesforce formula month, I’m happy! I also hope to continue empowering junior staff where they want to go in their careers as well.

If you had a friend who was thinking about working for Silverline, what advice would you give them?

Think about the WHY to what you want to do and where you want to go in your career.
